The first taste I ever had of anime was from my Aunt. She is no longer married to my Uncle, but I remember the first time I met her. She was from the Philippines so no one in my family had met her until my Uncle brought her over when I was 4. I had all these questions to ask her, followed her around, was nosy, and then I spied this animated thing sticking out of her bag - 'twas anime on VHS! I begged her to put it on, but I didn't understand a word of it and couldn't read subtitles so she turned it off :-( But it was too late, my interest was already peaked.
Fast forward a few years and I'm racing home to catch the last 10 minutes of the Toonami evening block and fighting my mother over the TV for 5 minutes so only getting to see the last 5 minutes of whatever was on last. It was sad . . . so very sad. BUT that is where I discovered Sailor Moon! Pretty, average girl is pretty and average and then finds out she has powers and wears pretty clothes and is a princess - it was a complete overload to my 8-year-old self. And now they are re-releasing the series, well, they have re-released the series. Well, to be the most accurate, they have re-done the series but it isn't quite a remake? They have adjusted the art style:
This lovely diagram shows Sailor Moons different styles (not by me, but from the internets)
And I think some of the story line has been altered somewhat to be more in tune with the manga, but only time will tell on that one. The first episode aired this weekend, simulcast, on Crunchyroll. The show delivered clean lines, excellent voice over, monster was actually scarier than when I was little . . . I had to share! If you've never watched Sailor Moon then check it out. If you watched the original then check it out. Just check it out!
Just to be nice, have a link to Crunchyroll :-) But if you know a better place to check then feel free to shout it out!
