Geek Girl Con 2014

Hello everyone!  So I went to my first GeekGirlCon over the weekend and had quite the blast so I thought I would give a big ol' shout out :-)

I decided not to cosplay this time around (actually had a meeting at the con and wasn't sure so . . .), but I present you with a Harley Quinn "Bound":

At first I wasn't sure about doing Bounds, but it seemed to be well accepted - I had a few people approach me for a photo!  So heads up to all my cosplayers, wannabe-but-too-nervous-cosplayers, budget cosplayers, or, really, just whoever, Bounds work and are fun!  I even found something to add to my Bound while wandering the Con.  Check these out:

(Photo is courtesy of Espionage Cosmetics!)

These are nail wraps.  You put them on your nails rounded part pressed flush to your cuticles, trim them and voila you have this:

(Photo is courtesy of Espionage Cosmetics!)

These beautiful babies are all products of Espionage Cosmetics.  They sell many nail wraps, all themed from Legos, to superhero masks, to just straight colors.  They also sell lip serums and eye shadow, including single colors and collections like the Borderlands 2 Collection and the Gamer Girl Special Edition.  Awesome Fact:  Many of their eye shadows can be mixed with their lip serums to create beautiful lip glosses.  AND the lip serums smell delicious - I was almost tempted to eat some (no, I don't recommend or encourage the eating of lip gloss!).  Check out more of these awesome products here!

-------------------------------------------------------------

Continuing forth, I typically don't go to panels at Con's (I prefer to wander and meet people and talk shop), but I went to a panel!  I sat in on the Cosplaying While Fat panel and was very pleased at the information I received.  Here are some helpful links :

 - Atomic Cosmetics - PLEASE NOTE: The site has a different name than the name of the product(s)! Now during the panel one of the speakers made a point I hadn't thought of: if you want to know how to do amazing make-up look to Drag-Queens!  Think about it, have you ever seen a professional Drag-Queen with bad makeup?  And they usually do it themselves!  I was then directed to Atomic Cosmetics and their foundations.  I think it may be a specific product (I am not sure, but I think it is the Spackle?), but I recall the speaker said you can put it on underneath your regular foundation (or theirs!) giving you a flawless finish and it WOULD NOT come off until you wash it off.  Sorry for my uncertainty - I made the mistake of not bringing a notebook!  Anyways, Atomic Cosmetics is a local company so check them out in person or in the link!

 - We Love Colors - OMGosh!  Tights and leggings and thigh highs!  In a ridiculous amount of colors!  And plus sizes!  I don't know about you all, but I have the thick thighs.  Most tights/leggings products that are supposed to be built for a woman at my weight DO NOT fit me AT ALL.  My thighs are always too big and end up ripping the product or being dug into :-(  This glorious site gives me options for this!  And the best part, they don't charge more for the bigger sizes.  The Cosplay, and just in general Clothing, Gods smile upon this site.  Check it!

 - Bandalettes - Prevents chafing.  Nuf said.

 - Sock Dreams - Glorious socks.  I love knee high socks.  That being said, they typically don't fit me right and cut off my circulation.  This site provides socks in bigger sizes :-)  The prices range, but they don't appear to charge much, if at all, more for larger sizes.  Yay!

Overall, I'd say the panel was very successful, I mean I got a bunch of information to use and share so hooray for these speakers!

-------------------------------------------------------------

So I met awesome people, found useful information, and enjoyed myself.  This equals a successful con in my book!  If you'd like more information on this Con then please check them out here!

Video Games - Gauntlet! Super Smash Demo! Hyrule Warriors!

AH I'M SO SORRY FOR MISSING MY POST LAST WEEK!  I was busy with family affairs (Abuela's birthday!) :-)  Anyays, now I'm back and ready for action!

First up, Gauntlet!  So this game was released last week for PC only and I've been playing it with the guys.  My very first ever experience with Gauntlet was at my local arcade.  I was only able to play by myself at the time which wasn't all that fun to me, but now there is this Gauntlet!  Graphics are good, soundtrack gets you ready for a fight, I would recommend playing with a group of people as all the characters bring their own awesome to the fight.  I actually posted up some footage of the game on my YouTube Channel.  FYI, I cuss . . .kind of a lot at times . . . sorry . . . there were spiders!  I do not like spiders, at all, and proceeded to flip out when I found there were spiders.

Second up, Super Smash Brothers Demo!  As I'm sure you all know by now, Nintendo did indeed release a limited demo for Super Smash Bros.  Initially it was only released to those who had reached a certain level on their Club Nintendo and then they released it to everybody!  Again, I never got to really play this game as a child because I was an only child.  Despite the fact that this was only a demo, I was very happy to play the heck out of it and discover the attacks.  I don't want to give a full, well anything, because there isn't much to tell as of yet.  I was unable to see any trophies or unlock-ables so, at first glance, it is a Smash Bros. game.  But I will be getting the actual game when it comes out on both 3DS and Wii U so I will update you then!

Last (but most definitely not least), Hyrule Warriors.  Hyrule freaking Warriors!!!!  I just about lost my mind when I first heard of this game.  Lost my mind more when I saw Impa!  I waited so patiently . . . and then I couldn't play it when it came out because I had a family affair O_O  Now I have played the hell out of it.  Characters are beautiful.  There is a crafting system.  Graphics are superb.  There are different ways to play.  You can customize your character (or rather their attributes).  You can choose the song you want to battle too!  There is so much fan service in this game . . .  Just go buy the game, seriously, you will not be disappointed.  And if you are disappointed . . . what is wrong with you?!

Random

So this past week I've had many things catch my attention so you get a post full of random-ness!

First, have you all checked out my YouTube?  So far I'm feeling good about it and I even added a link on the sidebar, over there, yup :-)

Second, I'm working on a commission!  During PAX Prime I was wearing my Glaceon hoodie from last October

You remember?  You remember!

A woman saw me wearing it and said "I have to ask, where did you get this?"  And I responded, most proudly, "I made it myself!"  She then asked if I did commissions.  I have actually never done a commission (which I informed her of), but said I would be happy to try.  So we worked it out and I am currently working on a commission!  I'll keep you all posted on that :-)

Third, Destiny came out!

There is no way you all haven't noticed that deluge of posts, photos, and reviews for this game, but I want to comment.  I've seen a lot of reviews saying the game is not that good and did not live up to the hype.  I'm actually surprised by this because there are very few games that live up to their hype.  Destiny has stunning visuals, a pleasant soundtrack (it reminds a little bit of Fable), and a decent loot system among other things.  There are of course parts of the game I feel they could have done more with; for example, the story line seems to be missing something.  BUT the game was created to be like an MMO and, as such, leaves a lot more room for adjustment and improvement of the system so I'm not too worried.  Also, Destiny may or may not be on my cosplay list . . . just sayin' . . .

So that is all for tonight, sweet and simple!  Oh and this:

This actually exists and made me giggle for quite a while.  More info here: The Thor War.  Enjoy!

New Project - Let's Play!

So my gaming history is . . . shall we say interesting.  The first console I ever laid eyes on was an old Tiger handheld.  I cannot recall which one it was, but I was not allowed to play it because it belonged to an older family friend who was 2 years older than me - yeah, I didn't get anywhere near it.  Another family friend, an adult this time, had an NES with a huge and glorious game collection complete with a beautiful gold Legend of Zelda cartridge.  I begged and begged to be allowed to play, but he would not let me near it.

(I got them both now, woot!)

My next experience was the original Nintendo Gameboy - grey brick baby!  Alas, it was bought for me but the adults played it so I never got to touch it.  And then, when I was 9 years old, Pokemon hit the scene.  I determined that the game would be mine and I would claim the Gameboy forever, so I did.  When I finally picked up Pokemon Blue I played from around 3 in the afternoon until 3 in the morning straight, my longest binge to date I think.  It was all uphill and some downhill from there.  My passion grew despite my family's efforts to stifle it.  When I graduated high school my gaming kind of went stagnant - didn't have enough money for any new consoles and couldn't finagle my family into buying me games any more.  It was a sad time :-(

But now I am a big kid and hey, "I'ma do just what I like!"  I have worked hard to get the consoles I have and, thanks to my awesome SO, stumbled across a screaming deal for a gaming computer.  It's not the perfect build nor is it a horrible build, but it will do the job right :-)

My new chubby baby :3

So I have now recorded my first Let's Play! for Bastion.  It's an older game, but I never got a chance to play so I'm working my way through it.  You can check it out here, but if you like it?  Let me know!  Constructive criticism?  Let me know!  Like it a lot?  Subscribe!

PAX Prime 2014

Now that I've had a day to just do nothing, I am back from PAX everybody!  I saw many things, I said many things, tried to keep a Twitter feed going but reception is AWFUL when you have that much wi-fi going at an event so there you are.  So here is a short recap:

Video Games:

There were the big name games that we all know are coming out soon: Assassin's Creed Unity and Rogue, Borderlands Pre-Sequel, Evolve, etc.  BUT I know I am purchasing these games so I tried to stick to the Indie games sections in which I found the following:

Assault Android Cactus:

Played a quick demo and it has nothing to do with cactus from what I could tell.  It was, however, the first time me and my SO played a co-op game without trying to harm each other (tried playing Portal *shudder*).  Graphics were 3D cartoonish and very clean.  Overall style was awesome.  Check them out on Steam:

Assault Android Cactus

Mega Coin Squad:

This multi-player game created by Adult Swim was extremely entertaining, I'd rate it pretty close to Super Smash or Mario Kart level.  You have coins to collect and you have to battle your friends to get them.  There is also a giant piggy bank squished in a bit and then oinked when you filled it with coins - oddly satisfying.  Check it out on Steam as well:

Mega Coin Squad

Costume Quest 2: I have not played the first installment, but that did not stop me from checking out the second installment.  Basically you are kids fighting to save Halloween from a very creepy dentist - seriously check out this guys mouth:

I was actually surprised by the overall gameplay.  There story is more fleshed out then simple save Halloween, the battle style is turn-based but with a slight flair to the animation, it's pretty solid.  Check it out here:

Costume Quest 2

Products:

Discovered a new product called a GlomTom.  What is it you ask?  It is an ergonomic pillow for playing video games from wherever really.  I tried it, it was awesome, I ordered one.  Will post about it later when I get it :-)  Until then, check them out:

GlomTom Twitter
GlomTom Facebook

(Sorry but their main site does not seem to be working at the moment . . .)

Cosplay:

Akali went off without a hitch, but my secret cosplay, Impa from Hyrule Warriors, had a malfunction :-(  It was sad, but I could not present her in such a fashion, so instead you can overload on Akali for a bit.  The following are the only photos I can find at the moment.  I will upload them to my FB page (at www.facebook.com/TheECGeekette)

All props to Lifted Geek for snapping this photo!

Riot had what they called a Cospitality Lounge.  Cosplayers could come take a break, get some water, and take a break from cameras (if needs be).  Of course, their own cameras were present, lol.

And another of the whole group :-)

And that was PAX!  It was awesome fun times and can't wait for next year!  Now what else can I get into . . .

Loot Crate (how have I not mentioned this before?!)

I realized the other day that I've never written about Loot Crate!

So Loot Crate is a monthly subscription and in return for your hard earned cash you get a box full of geeky gamer goodies.  Goodies range from Pop! Figures, to magnets, to shirts, and a number of other fun stuff.  Every month is different of course, you never know what you're going to get.  Every box has an overall theme like Dragons, or Villains, or Heroes.

The "crate" shows up in this unassuming box - mail for me?  What could it be?!

 Look at all this stuff!

This wasn't always a feature, but they have started doing art all over the inside of the box :-)  This months box was styled after the TMNT lair.

The hook-up this month was a special edition glow-in-the-dark Groot Pop! Figure, TMNT Sunglasses, TMNT Figure, Sonic the Hedgehog air freshener, Chimichangeos Deadpool magnet, special Loot Crate button, Codes for some games, and a pair of Thunderbolt Shwings (you put them on your shoes, perfect for PAX!).  Oh and the box always comes with a booklet explaining this months choices of loot.

Typically the crate has some really good stuff.  I know men and women who also receive crates and they are awesome monthly surprises for kiddos.  And the fees are not bad at all either.  Anywho, go check it out here:

COSPLAY UPDATE - Akali and Secret Cosplay

I am so focused on cosplay right now. . . or cosplaying at PAX, hard to say . . .

UPDATES!  I started putting together Akali's scythes.  I've got a PVC foam board base, EVA foam as a brace/hilt type thing, and PVC tube as the handle.  The base and tube are supposed to be sandwiched between the EVA foam, but I ran into a problem - the tube was too big to fit between the foam.  I could have gotten a smaller tube, but then i might not have had enough stability so . . .   Lucky for me my best friend suggested melting the tube to flatten it.  I thought the tube couldn't be melted, but woo-hoo it can - heads up, PVC tubing smells awful when you melt it.  So after cutting a slit for the base to slide into I melted the tube, sandwiched the base in the slit, and then melted it flat, well, flat-ish.

And my SO said I should be kind so I'm posting some photos of part of my secret cosplay - ARMOR!

One of the pieces actually belongs to Akali, but not saying which.  Anyone care to guess the secret cosplay?  Whoever gets it will get a big "WHO'S AWESOME?  YOU'RE AWESOME!" :-)

Oh and COSPLAY BOO-BOO!  I don't usually hurt myself while working on stuff (not sure how), but the glue gun dripped and my instant reaction was oh-no-grab-it!  Needless to say, this happened

Not that bad, but still OW.

Cosplay Update 2 - Akali

So over the weekend, I worked on cosplay like a beast and . . .

PAX TICKETS ARRIVED!!!!!!!

Ok, now that that's out of my system, I just stopped working on cosplay for the day and thought it was time for some progress photos :-)

First up, raw cut pieces of armor (sorry it's dark!) -

These will soon be sanded, bent, scored (for battle-worn-ness), and painted.  I'm using PVC Foam board, I believe it 1/4 of an inch thick.  It will be heated with a heat gun (gives me more control).

Second up, the dress (it's somewhat janky here, but just keep reading)

This was so hard to sew.  At first I tried just using a second dress as lining.  Made the mistake of NOT taking the second dress a part, just tried to work around it.  Yeah, sewed the whole thing, realized it was wrong, took everything a part.

Third, the jacket!

Spandex was not as hard to sew as I thought it would be.  I tried reading up and got all these great tips, but, for what I was doing, a lot of stuff just wasn't necessary.  I used black polyester thread with a zigzag stitch with the machine set to stretch.  Worked like a charm!

And now, the partially finished look!

Put it all together and so far so good I think.  Now for the fabricating!  I don't typically do armor so wish me luck!

Also, who else is going to PAX?  Anyone want to talk some cosplay shop?

Obligatory GOTG Post!

OBLIGATORY Guardians of the Galaxy time!

SPOILERS SPOILER SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

Favorites:

Groot Baby! - I may have actually squee-ed a little bit when this happened, just couldn't take it.  And then he started dancing and I just about lost it.  I've grown accustomed to writers killing off my favorite characters and that is just that so it was nice to see this for a change.

Rocket Raccoon - He really kind of stole the show a little bit :-)  Non-human animal characters tend to be used as comic relief or a more minor character overall (even if they are a lead) so I was bouncing off the walls that he actually took point in a lot of scenes.

Thanos: More of the villain!  I'm enjoying how all the movies are tying together.  You can see elements from the more recent Marvel movies (within the last 7 years or so) being pulled into Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy and its all leading up to something that should prove unbelievably awesome.  I appreciate the character development for the villain because, this way, its more of a build up to the main event instead of "Oh hey, Earth; die."

Critiques:

Princes of the Universe, by Queen, should have been somewhere in this movie.  Yes, I know Gamorra is not a Prince, but still . . . tell me this wouldn't have been awesome

And so begins PAX Countdown

So it is officially 31 days until PAX! (it is still July 28 where I'm at)  I am oh so very excited and have gone into full cosplay beast mode.  I have 2 cosplays I'm working on for PAX this year: one is secret and, as discussed before, the other is Akali (from LOL).  The secret one you will just have to wait for updates on BUUUT I finally got all the pieces for Akali's weapons cut and started on the clothing.  I have spent the last 7 hours (almost straight) working on costumes and while I worked I had to remind myself of some things:

  1. You will mess up.  That's okay; just work around it :-)
  2. Be creative: this seems obvious because cosplay, but I've seen many many people become so focused on "how do I do this properly?"  There is no properly.  If you can't work one way then find another way.
  3. REFERENCE PHOTOS!  Look at them, look again, Again, AGAIN!!!!!  This saves me every single time.
  4. Pick good background noise - I usually put on some random favorite movie or show, but right now, My Little Pony.  Yup.
Anywho, that's all for tonight, just a random little note :-)  I need sleep . . .

More Portal? Yes please!

So yesterday, I logged into my Steam account after my SO had used my computer to access his account.  Check messages, see if there are any sales, blah blah.  And then I see this:

After going into a FULL PANIC that I had somehow missed Portal 3 (you haven't) I realized that I instead somehow missed a DLC/mini-game.  Yes I call it that because it isn't technically an extension and it doesn't seem to be a whole new game - it's more of a  . . . hopefully in-between game?  *crosses fingers*  Anywho, the amazing people at Valve decided to grace us with some new levels that only use the orange and blue paint first seen in Portal 2.  It actually looks like you aren't using a Portal Gun at all, but an actual gun designed specifically for the paints -  you can actually see the paint slosh around when you turn :-)

Of course I played for a bit and so far the puzzles are challenging.  The music is pretty awesome, too - a whole new soundtrack apparently.  I've got to say though that I am still being cautious about the AI in this game.  They have yet to insult me, or try to kill me, or offer me cake . . .  I'm getting a bit paranoid, lol.  I'm honestly hoping that somehow this will tie into an entirely new Portal game *crosses fingers*.

Ok that's all.  Now back to Aperture Tag to see if there is any indication of a new Portal game :-)

Big-Kid Board Games (not necessarily, but I like that title!)

Last weekend was my SO's birthday and he is very into board games and so I got him a bunch for his birthday.  Two of these games are Krosmaster Arena and Marvel Dice Masters and I thought I would share with you all :-)

Krosmaster is a tactics and victory points board game with pretty awesome figures.  Now, typically I don't go for tactics games; there is just so much going on that I cannot focus, kind of like a child in large toy shop.  BUT this game gives a happy medium - there is enough to keep me thinking, but not so much that I forget what is happening, kind of like a child in a mid-sized candy shop.  I am also particularly enamored with the art style of the game.  The game is definitely cartoon-like, but it just looks so good!  Have some photos!

Left: Core game and Right: Frigost Expansion (we kickstarted this one!)

Each character has a figure and they come with a card explaining their abilities, points, etc . . .

For more information about this awesome game check out their website!

Krosmaster

And Marvel Dice Masters.  Now this game, I'm not going to lie, at first it was a bit confusing, but oh-my-goodness it is pretty cool and extremely strategic.  It is a dice game which utilizes both cards and dice.  In a nutshell, you have two types of cards and 3 types of dice.  Characters cards have dice that go with only that character; Action cards have dice that can only be used with that action (though you dictate this every game);  and then there are dice that are used for completing an action or "purchasing" more dice (in-game).  Using the dice you have to decide your move and anticipate both your opponents future moves and your own future moves (yes, you do, or you die).  Since there are so many different cards and dice there is a definite air of needing to collect - I want all the Storm and Loki cards and dice!

I cosplay her so I have to rock her in a game, of course!

The playing mat!  They actually sell these, too.  Very helpful.

For more information on this game check out their website!

Sailor Moon Nostalgia

Feeling nostalgic and excited so I thought I'd share :-)

The first taste I ever had of anime was from my Aunt.  She is no longer married to my Uncle, but I remember the first time I met her.  She was from the Philippines so no one in my family had met her until my Uncle brought her over when I was 4.  I had all these questions to ask her, followed her around, was nosy, and then I spied this animated thing sticking out of her bag - 'twas anime on VHS!  I begged her to put it on, but I didn't understand a word of it and couldn't read subtitles so she turned it off :-(  But it was too late, my interest was already peaked.

Fast forward a few years and I'm racing home to catch the last 10 minutes of the Toonami evening block and fighting my mother over the TV for 5 minutes so only getting to see the last 5 minutes of whatever was on last.  It was sad . . . so very sad.  BUT that is where I discovered Sailor Moon!  Pretty, average girl is pretty and average and then finds out she has powers and wears pretty clothes and is a princess - it was a complete overload to my 8-year-old self.  And now they are re-releasing the series, well, they have re-released the series.  Well, to be the most accurate, they have re-done the series but it isn't quite a remake?  They have adjusted the art style:

This lovely diagram shows Sailor Moons different styles (not by me, but from the internets)

And I think some of the story line has been altered somewhat to be more in tune with the manga, but only time will tell on that one.  The first episode aired this weekend, simulcast, on Crunchyroll.  The show delivered clean lines, excellent voice over, monster was actually scarier than when I was little . . .  I had to share!  If you've never watched Sailor Moon then check it out.  If you watched the original then check it out.  Just check it out!

Just to be nice, have a link to Crunchyroll :-)  But if you know a better place to check then feel free to shout it out!

Cosplay Update - Akali

A while back I said I would make cosplay updates - time to make due on that promise!  So recently I started working on one of my cosplays for PAX Prime - Akali from League of Legends:

Clearly this a very stylized version of Akali.  There is a wonderful artist named Loiza and, while there are pop star versions of a few LOL characters, she did a full set of pop star designs for almost all of the female; she is even starting work on the males from what I've heard.  Check her out here:  Loiza Chen - Facebook

Now I've decided to begin my work on the weapons - two 3 foot scythes.  Yes I'm trying to make them as close to accurate as possible, hehehe.  I am using a dremel (off brand) with a set of sanding tips, PVC Foam board, and EVA foam to build the blades themselves.  The handles will be simple enough so its a matter of painting after that.  So here are some photos!

Drawing out the pattern for the blade and bracers around it.

Full pattern laid out on PVC.

Dremeling - one of a cosplayers best friends.  Oh and check the mismatched socks, woot!

Fully cut out and raring to go!

Brace (?) made out of EVA foam.  I realized after I had cut that the blades in the photo were turned at an angle, thus making extra bumps and points that don't exist.  I cut it out that way (as you can see above), but I am able to correct that with the brace :-)  Improvisation!

I made a mistake and tried to dremel indoors . . .  Notice the bits of PVC all over me.  I do not recommend using a dremel indoors.

So that is the start of this cosplay.  I will post updates when I have more progress to show.  Keep an eye out!

WildStar!

As you should have heard, WildStar, the latest MMORPG to hit the interwebs is officially out!  Yes, it came out at the beginning of the month and I am just writing about it now - I wanted to actually play it before I made any comments.

So first things first, some background.  WildStar was created by some of the guys who created WOW - we all know what that is right?  I actually never played (don't hurt me!), but I know what it is and how it rolls. Anywho, they all wanted to do something new and so they created their own game studio, game, and, being unsatisfied with what was available, even their own engine to run said game.  Thus Wildstar came into being and, I must say, what a being it is.  I could go into every detail, but I think I'll just hit on my favorite things :-)

Customization! - This is big for me.  From your character, to your clothes, to your house, mount, weapons, and various other things Wildstar allows you to make quite a few things your own.  This may seem like a "duh" situation for some, but I am absolutely overjoyed at how much I can do what I want in this game.  I'm a bit of a perfectionist, everything must be a certain way!  And this beautiful game encourages that :-)

WildStar customization housing
(Different houses)

Quests! - So many quests!  Straight out the gate you are given quite a few missions to complete and then they just keep coming.  And on a giant map, which I'm actually not sure how big the map actually is.  Tried looking it up to give you all a more official word, but it looks like, in addition to the giant map I am currently on, there are 3 other maps of similar size.  This is gonna take a while . . . more to explore!  Oh and I got to mention, the Narrator.  It's been my game experience that the Narrator can be obnoxious - butting in, pointing out the obvious, etc.  The WildStar Narrator (does he have a name?) is a spunky smart-ass with just the right dose of profanity.  He can be annoying of course, but he isn't too over-the-top.

(Map is courtesy of Redditor MtlSnk - the actual post.  Note, this map was made 7 months ago, but seems pretty accurate I think.)

Soundtrack! - It would seem that a lot of effort went into the soundtrack for this game.  I would post some links, but I can't seem to find any official ones for just the music . . .  I take it back!  I found one on their official Youtube page - Character Creation Theme

Hopefully I've been a little bit helpful.  There is just so much in this game that I couldn't tell you where to begin.

Check out WildStar officially here! - WildStar

For trailers and gameplay footage check out the official Youtube page: WildStarOnline
